MANASSAS, Va., Sept. 17, 2013 – Praised by The Washington Post as a “forceful, tasteful, unglorified presentation of ethnic expression,” the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble presents “Hungarian Rhapsody,” a spirited journey through time that traces the history of this thousand-year-old culture through its rich dance and music traditions. This mesmerizing performance, presented by this company of gifted Eastern European dancers and musicians, comes to the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013 at 8 p.m. A pre-performance discussion, free to ticket holders, begins 45 minutes prior to the performance in the Hylton Center’s Buchanan Partners Art Gallery. Novant Health is the 2013-2014 Hylton Presents Season Sponsor.

“Hungarian Rhapsody” captures centuries of Hungarian peasant traditions and provides a unique look into this diverse but unified culture that stretches far into the past, yet is ongoing. This authentic and beautiful program features the famed Hungarian Csárdás, a girls’ ring dance from upper Hungary, a swineherds’ dance and march, a Jewish harp dance, a performance of Transylvanian folk songs and much more. Audiences around the world have been thrilled by the stunning acrobatics of the men’s dances, the graceful lyricism of the women’s dances and the astounding virtuosity of the dances for couples.

Since its founding in 1951, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble has revitalized and preserved the culture of the Hungarian people. Its impressive repertoire is based on traditional dances, some collected from tiny, isolated villages throughout its homeland with dance elements dating back many centuries. The ensemble’s choreography is enhanced by vibrant costumes and extraordinary folk music – which inspired the likes of Liszt, Brahms, Bartók and Kodály – performed live by the talented Folk Orchestra, whose members play traditional Hungarian instruments, as well as the Gipsy Orchestra, which plays both dance accompaniments and performs alone. The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble has performed in 44 countries across four continents to more than seven and a half million people. The ensemble also gives approximately 90-100 annual performances each year in its Corvin tér theatre, in the Budai Vigadó in Budapest, Hungary.

Please note: The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble will also perform “Hungarian Rhapsody” at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts in Fairfax on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 at 4 p.m. Please visit cfa.gmu.edu for more information.
