Background Story:

Occoquan’s “Art on the Block” is the brain child of local Occoquan artists, David and Jane Ernst, (members of the Artists’ Undertaking Gallery), who approached the other artists in this small community to form a collective to showcase the artwork in the Occoquan galleries.  The first event was held on November 12, 2011, and was deemed a great success. “We wanted to help make Occoquan a destination place for art lovers”, said Jane Ernst. “Occoquan has in its galleries over 60 talented local artists, all within two-blocks”.  In addition to the artwork in the galleries, Occoquan has many eclectic shops offering the visitor many unique items not found in your local chain stores. “Our little community is one of those hidden jewels waiting to be discovered, and then revisited often”.

With the success of the first “Art on the Block”, the galleries decided to make this a semi-annual event, with the other date being the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend in May.

On Saturday, November 9, from 1 to 5 pm, five galleries – Art A La Carte, Artists’ Undertaking Gallery, Brambles, The Loft Gallery and Mill Street Studio – welcomes everyone to come and visit them in Occoquan and enjoy their creative endeavors.  Many of the artists will be available to discuss their work, answer questions, and some, demonstrating their talents.  Each gallery will have a reception, with some having special drawings for prizes.
