MANASSAS, Va., Oct. 28, 2013 – Hailing from Ireland’s County Waterford, Danú brings a Celtic Christmas celebration straight from the Emerald Isle to Manassas when the spectacular band performs “Christmas in Ireland: An Nollaig in Éirinn” at the Hylton Performing Arts Center on Friday, Dec. 6, 2013 at 8 p.m. A pre-performance discussion, free to ticketholders, begins 45 minutes prior to the performance in the Hylton Center’s Buchanan Partners Art Gallery. Novant Health is the 2013-2014 Hylton Presents Season Sponsor.
This heartwarming concert features traditional Celtic music and song that pays homage to early Irish customs such as placing a candle in the window as a symbol of welcome; “The Laden Table,” a Christmas Eve tradition in which families set the table with a loaf of bread with caraway seeds and raisins, a pitcher of milk and a lit candle, and leave the door unlatched for wandering travelers; and a procession from house to house on St. Stephen’s Day.
Named after a goddess in Celtic mythology, Danú is famous throughout its homeland for its authentic interpretations of traditional Irish music, ebullient performances and incredible talent, which has brought countless fans to its spirited, high-energy concerts. For almost two decades, Danú has performed for a loyal following worldwide, demonstrating its impressive mastery of traditional Celtic instruments, such as the fiddle, flute, button accordion, tin whistle and bouzouki, complemented by striking vocals in Irish and English. The recipient of numerous BBC and Irish Music Magazine Awards, Danú has performed for audiences across Europe, the Middle East and North America at such venues as the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Symphony Space in New York City and major concert engagements in the United Kingdom, India and Israel. The band has released several recordings on the Shanachie label and its live performances are frequently broadcasted on NPR, the CBC and the BBC. Danú’s live DVD, “One Night Stand,” was filmed at Vicar St. Dublin in Ireland. “[Danú] stirs the blood and lifts the heart.” (Irish Music Magazine)
