On Dec. 31, 2012, Prince William County Police Officer Chris Yung, 35, died as the result of a traffic accident at Va. 28 and Piper Lane when he was on his way to help others involved in a separate accident a few miles away.
One year later, on Dec. 31, 2013, Yung’s former colleagues, friends and family gathered at the Prince William County Public Safety Training Center to unveil a portrait of Yung that will hang in a prominent position alongside two other Prince William police officers who died in the line of duty. The portraits hang in the entrance of the training center.
Yung’s widow, Robin, spoke at the ceremony and told a story of a time when her husband stopped to help a woman who was stranded with a flat tire even though they running late for a dinner reservation. “Even though we were late, Chris said he couldn’t just pass her and leave her stranded.”
Robin Yung said the story illustrated her late husband’s character. “He was always there to help a friend, a family member, a fellow officer or even a stranger.”
Robin Yung said her husband was, “one of the greatest people she had ever had the privilege to know,” and asked that the people at the ceremony carry Chris Yung in their memories. “When you leave here today, I hope you choose to keep Chris’ memory alive by remembering his humble ways and incorporating his humility in your daily lives.”
Police Chief Steve Hudson said the portrait of Officer Yung is a reminder of his service, his family and his sacrifice. “Chris was a good husband, father, son, brother and police officer. Chris lived a life of service, and all of us in this Department are honored that he chose to serve the people of Prince William County alongside us.”
Yung was the third officer killed in the line of duty and the last law enforcement officer in America to lose his life in 2012.
Yung is survived by his wife, Robin Yung, a former PWCPD officer, and their three children: Christopher “Bate,” Clayton and Paige Yung; his parents, Edward and Jennifer Yung; his brother and sister-in-law, Brian and Jamie Yung; and his brother and sister-in-law, Officer Dale Yung and Officer Nancy Yung, both with PWCPD.
