HAYMARKET, Va., March 14, 2014 – Paola McDonald, designer and owner of Olamar Interiors based in Haymarket, was awarded two Designer of the Year Awards at the 2014 Interior Design Society (IDS) National Conference in Las Vegas, Nev. McDonald was named 1st place in the Specialty Area of Children’s rooms, playrooms, and nurseries, and she was named 2nd place in the category of Living Spaces — $30,000 and under.
The designer was recognized in the area of children’s rooms for designing a whimsical, creative and sophisticated room for a bright and energetic six-year-old girl. The room features purple, green and blue horizontal stripes on all four walls, a beautiful custom built window seat complete with custom draperies that create a hidden nook for the little girl and her friends, and plenty of storage for the young girl’s large collection of books.
She was also recognized for creating a truly unique, bright and comfortable sunroom for a family in Herndon, VA. As part of a complete main level design project, McDonald designed and installed a unique sunroom where the family could hang out and read, entertain and simply escape. The sunroom features a dark blue medallion wallpaper on the tray ceiling, gorgeous cotton draperies with a scroll pattern also in dark blue, plenty of seating in the form a large sofa and accent chair and, most creatively, two outdoor egg chair swings installed from the ceiling. “They are our daughter’s favorite spot in the house,” stated the happy homeowner.
“I feel truly honored and blessed to have had the opportunity to design these wonderful spaces,” said McDonald. “Both clients were a pleasure to work with and were the inspiration and reason for me winning these awards. I am truly grateful.”
Snoa Garrigan from the Interior Design Society and Mark Brunetz, interior designer, television host, and writer, presented awards to this year’s recipients. Brunetz recently received an Emmy® Award as the co-host of Clean House on the Style Network.
