WOODBRIDGE, VIRGINIA – Early Saturday morning, the Woodbridge Potomac Communities Civic Association (WPCCA) gathered along Neabsco Creek Court for their annual Neabsco Creek Cleanup.
This year, 49 volunteers, including people from the Civic Association, Prince William Trails & Streams Coalition, Mary G. Porter Traditional School, and the Hylton Environmental Club, collected 2,180 lbs of trash from the wetlands of Neabsco Creek. This resulted in 76 bags full of bottles, cans, and other debris, as well as 19 tires, two tricycles, and a bowling ball.
Lynda Silverstrand, a longtime WPCCA Board Member, organizes the cleanup every year. “I started years ago by supplying my own time and bags to clean the woods where Port Potomac housing development is now,” says Lynda. Eventually, she enlisted the help of the Civic Association and other community volunteers and moved the cleanup over to Neabsco Creek. “With their help, we have made great progress. Everyone is delighted to join the party and have a fun day of giving back to our community.”
The Woodbridge Potomac Communities Civic Association focuses on issues of “redevelopment, transportation, and the environment in the Woodbridge District,” said John Karhnak, Chairman of the Woodbridge Potomac Communities Civic Association. “Any resident, business owner, or non-profit in the Woodbridge District is encouraged to join at no cost. We meet monthly at various locations across the district to hear presentations from developers and community stakeholders.”
The next opportunity to volunteer is on Saturday, April 26, for the Route 1 Litter Pickup, organized in conjunction with Keep Prince William Beautiful. Individuals should meet at the Kiss and Ride at the Woodbridge VRE Station at 9AM. Youth under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
