National Volunteer Month 2014

Contributed by Prince William Public Library System

pwc library(Prince William County, VA, 04/24/2014)… The 34th annual volunteer reception for the Prince William Public Library System volunteers was held on two different occasions in April during National Volunteer Month.  Belinda Tyson, Volunteer Program Coordinator, and library staff supervisors welcomed the 580 volunteers who sustain the libraries throughout the year.  The volunteers were treated to a delicious lunch, an opportunity to network with other volunteers, and graciously thanked for their hard work and dedication to sustain the libraries.  “The volunteers of the Library System worked 34,008 hours this fiscal year and their hard-working dedication translates into a cost savings of $837,963 for the Library System!”, said Dr. Connie Gilman, Library System Director.

Burk Andrews, chair of the Library Board of Trustees, Dr. Connie Gilman, Library System Director, and numerous other County officials helped to celebrate the occasions.  Recognition for years of service awards were cited for five years of service and up.  Two volunteers, Betty Geisler and Jan McConnell have been volunteers at Central Community Library for 32 years!

The Diligence Award also known as the Janice Campbell Award goes to the volunteer at each location who donated the most hours between March 2013 and February 2014.   In Administration, the award goes to Gayathri Sridhar, Bull Run, Lindsay Suit; Central, Bethany Turner; Chinn Park, Alice Leggett; Dale City, Jerry Turner; Dumfries, Robert Weeks II, Gainesville, Mary Ellen Marrion; Independent Hill, Robert Nicol; Lake Ridge, Cornelia Touzinsky; Nokesville, Janice Speakes and Potomac, David Forcier.

The Friends of the Library groups were also honored as they provide substantial financial support for our libraries by conducting book sales.  Their generosity is exemplified by the amount of money they give to the libraries for the summer reading programs, special events, computer classes, concerts and other performances.

During National Volunteer Month 2014, we thank the volunteers who make our lives better on a daily basis and who support us willingly without hesitation all year long!  Bravo to our Volunteers!
