A Cool Day Trip

Okay, when I say cool, it’s a little bit of a pun—but what I really meant was a cold day trip that is really cool. Recently I took a tour of the ICE! exhibit at the Gaylord National Resort at National Harbor in Washington, DC—which is only a hop, skip and jump away from PW!

The kids are out of school for a few more days and if you’re looking for the coolest activity around the local DC area, then look no further than ICE! and celebrate Christmas on the Potomac. This year’s new ICE! theme runs through January 4th and has Frosty the Snowman slipping and sliding all over the place with vibrant colored ice sculptures and a temperatures that drop way below freezing. To prepare you for the icy temps, everyone gets to don oversized blue parkas to keep you warm; or at least not as cold.

Once you enter the main area and see all the bright colors and whimsical ice art, you almost forget that you’re freezing (almost). The exhibit is filled with rooms that tell the story of Frosty the Snowman and his friends as they make their way to the North Pole and really showcases the skill of the ice carvers. Kids of all ages and even those of us who are kids at heart can enjoy this winter wonderland of nearly two million pounds of hand-carved ice!

One of the most exciting and interactive parts of the exhibit are the giant two-story ice slides. With several lanes of slides, there’s barely any wait time and people can ride as many times as they want. The ice carvings are up against dark backdrops, which are well lit and makes for some amazing photos as well.

After you leave the exhibit, be sure to pick up your photo that was taken at the entrance and stop by the gift shop for a cup of hot chocolate to warm you up as you stroll through the other Christmas on the Potomac exhibits. Kids will enjoy the train ride, decorating gingerbread houses with Gingy and the lighting of the Christmas tree with dancing lights and real snow.  You can easily spend a half day visiting all the exhibits, make it an overnighter by booking a room at the Gaylord.

ICE! runs through January 4th, visit their website for times and prices. http://www.marriott.com/hotel-info/wasgn-gaylord-national-resort-and-convention-center/christmas-on-the-potomac/xyjvxiz/ice.mi
