The Woodbridge Campus of Northern Virginia Community College will participate in a statewide two-part screening of the new film, Democracy for Sale, on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at NOVA-Woodbridge Lakeside Theatre, 2645 College Drive, Woodbridge. The first screening will be held at 4:00 p. m., followed by a second screening at 7:00 p. m. The film features North Carolina native and comedian Zach Galifianakis focusing on the lack of environmental protection in North Carolina, education cuts, gerrymandering and laws designed to decrease voter turnout through political interests.
Democracy for Sale is presented by the Virginia Civic Engagement Table in partnership with Working Films. Both screening events will be followed by a Q&A and panel discussion led by representatives from local host organizations. The event is hosted by the Hispanic Organization for Leadership and Action (HOLA), the League of Women Voters and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Leaders of the film tour hope the screenings will show audiences how to become involved in demanding reform. Democracy for Sale is part of the EPIX original documentary series America Divided, an EPIX Original docu-series, executive produced by Norman Lear, Shonda Rhimes and Common, which features narratives around inequality in education, housing, healthcare, labor, criminal justice and the political system — all woven into an eight-story, five-part series.
Democracy for Sale film screenings and panel discussions will be held in the Lakeside Theatre, located on the first floor of the Seefeldt Building (WS). The event is free and open to the public, however, registration is required. To register please visit screeningdemocracyforsale.eventbrite.com
