Making the Most of Life with Parkinson’s: A Care Partner’s Perspective

Provided by Strategic Management Partners

Strategic Management Partners announced today that Arlene Edwards of the Parkinson Social Network will share her personal experiences as a “been there, done that” care partner in a session focusing on life with Parkinson’s disease and how care partners can best help their loved ones at Navigating the Caregiving Journey, a conference to empower family caregivers with resources and knowledge. Despite a growing awareness and the help of well-known people living with Parkinson’s like Michael J. Fox and Mohammed Ali, Parkinson’s disease is still often misunderstood. That’s not at all surprising given that doctors and scientists are learning how complex it is in their search for a cure.

Arlene Edwards retired from Capitol Hill to become a full-time care partner for her husband who had advanced Parkinson’s disease.  She worked alongside him in various exercise programs and became active with care partners when he finally consented to join a support group.  Recognizing the complexity of the disease, Arlene draws on her personal experience as a “been there, done that” care partner during the 18 years of his illness to help support other care partners.   After his passing, she continued working with the care partners in their support group and assists in a water exercise program designed for people with Parkinson’s disease. She also is active with the Parkinson’s cafés in both Fairfax and Ashburn, leadership programs for care partners, and is a board member and officer in the Parkinson Social Network.

Navigating the Caregiving Journey will be held October 7, 2017 at the Hilton Garden Inn at 2500 Neabsco Common Place, Woodbridge. Registration is required. To register, visit mycaregivingjourney.com.
