Did you know that mothers in the sandwich generation — ages 35 to 54 — experience the most stress of anyone? If you fall into this category, we bet you’re saying “Oh, yes.” It’s tough enough to be a parent, work, taxi kids around to all those sports and keep up your household. Throw in a parent or two to care for, and you’ve got a perfect storm of stress.
Caring for our loved ones is rewarding, and we know you wouldn’t have it any other way. But what if you could still care for everyone while experiencing a little less stress? Are you saying “Oh, yes!” again but with a little more enthusiasm? Here are a few of our best tips to help you juggle it all, including your own health.
Actively work to manage your stress.
Schedule this into your daily or weekly schedule. Do yoga, sit down with tea and a book, take a hot bath, get a massage, take a walk or meditate. Whatever stress reliever speaks to you, find some time for it in your life. Maybe you can sneak in some reading and coffee or a run while your children are at practice.
Care for yourself as well as you do others.
How would you feel if your child ate junk all day and only got five hours of sleep the night before a big game? You’d be all over him! Treat yourself the same way. Make it a priority to eat a balanced diet, fit in some exercise and get seven to eight hours of sleep a night.
Take things off your plate.
We bet you’re thinking there is nothing you can delegate, but think again. Opening more time in your schedule gives you quality time to spend with all of your family members. It can take you from being a full-time caregiver to being able to just serve as a son or daughter again. Wouldn’t that be nice? Take a look at these ideas:
- Share with family. If your siblings or other family members are local, split up tasks. But even if they aren’t, there are still things they can help out with. Once a week they could have a Skype chat with your parents, so you can have a sit-down family dinner at home and not feel like they won’t have company. Other family members could handle scheduling doctor’s appointments and transportation. They can refill prescriptions online regardless of their location. Make a list of tasks where distance doesn’t matter, and delegate them.
- Identify outside resources. Check with your local Area Agency on Aging for help with transportation, personal care, meal services and more. Research personal assistant and errand running services to take everyday tasks off your plate. While you may pay a small fee for them to complete tasks, what you’re really paying for is more quality time with the ones you love.
When you’re a sandwich generation sports mom, it’s easy to feel trapped and bound to your rigorous schedule. Set aside a few minutes of time to examine ways you can alleviate some of your stress.
