Provided by Prince William Fire & Rescue
International Walk to School Day is on Wednesday, Oct. 4. More than 1,000 schools nationwide participate in this event. The event was created as a means to encourage more children to safely walk and bicycle to school emphasizing the importance of increased physical activity and pedestrian safety. In addition, not only our children but our communities will benefit due to a reduction in traffic congestion resulting in better air quality for the environment; therefore, building connections between families, schools and the broader community.
To encourage and increase the number of children that walk and bike to school, in 2016 Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue members walked to or at schools with over 15,000 students throughout the county. In the U.S., International Walk to School Day is expected to be celebrated at over 3,500 events at participating schools; walkers from the U.S. will join children and adults in 40 countries around the world.
