Manassas Ballet Theatre Presents 12 Nutcrackers

Provided by Manassas Ballet Theatre

Clara, her Nutcracker Prince, the Snow Queen and the Sugarplum Fairy help usher in the holidays with Manassas Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcracker. MBT’s Nutcracker is an unforgettable family classic that is annually the best- attended performing arts production in Northern Virginia.

Anchored by the dancers of MBT, Northern Virginia’s largest professional ballet company with 27 full-time dancers from around the globe, the dreamy story comes alive with the help of an ensemble cast and the Manassas Ballet Theatre Orchestra. Exquisite costumes, dazzling custom scenery, fresh choreography and live orchestra are the hallmarks of Northern Virginia’s premier Nutcracker production.

This year, there are 12 performances to choose from at the beautiful and accessible Hylton Performing Arts Center on the Manassas campus of George Mason University, with both evening and matinee performances Dec. 14-23. The Hylton is an award-winning venue, located conveniently close to I-66 with free parking. The ultimate Nutcracker experience is easy, affordable, and close to home!

“There are always spectacular new elements each year,” says artistic director Amy Grant Wolfe, who returned to leading the choreography for this year’s production. “As the company grows, so does our Nutcracker!” This year, Wolfe commissioned a beautiful border (hand painted by Tim Grant) for the snow scene, adding even more depth to an audience favorite. The border is taking shape in the studio scene shop alongside the sewing machines of costume mistress Christina Brooks. “The studios are filled with rehearsing dancers, and the scene shop is all paint and fabric at the moment,” laughs Wolfe. “We are busy creating in all corners!”

On Dec. 14, opening night, MBT presents the annual Salute to the Military, with tickets for active duty, veterans, and service professions such as police, fire and EMT, free of charge.

Salute to the Military is a ceremony that celebrates and thanks all military members and branches for their service, featuring the Manassas Ballet Theatre Orchestra playing the National Anthem and the four service anthems, bagpipes playing “Amazing Grace” from the second balcony, a color guard, and an introduction of this year’s honoree, General Glenn M. Walters, Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps. For the Dec. 14 Nutcracker performance, both active duty and veterans are invited to attend at no charge, with accompanying tickets offered at 25% off. We thank Dominion Foundation for being our 2017 sponsor.

Military tickets (plus accompanying tickets at 25% off) for Salute to the Military on the opening night of THE NUTCRACKER, Thursday, Dec. 14, are available by calling or emailing the studio at (703) 257-1811 or  [email protected], and in person at the HPAC box office with a military ID.
