Road Crews Ready for More Wintry Weather This Week

Provided by Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)

Virginia Department of Transportation crews are carefully watching the forecast for a chance of precipitation during the following periods this week:

  • Tuesday evening, beginning during rush hour, temperatures in the teens
  • Wednesday evening/overnight, beginning during rush hour, temperatures in the 20s
  • Friday morning, highest chances during morning rush hour, temperatures at or below freezing

Maintenance crews pretreated roads on Monday and will mobilize to treat problem areas with salt and sand as needed throughout the week.

Drivers are asked to:

  • Continue to check weather forecasts daily, as storm timing and intensity can change. Temperatures will be well below freezing each night.
  • If conditions are icy, consider staying off the roads by either teleworking or adjusting your commute time to when temperatures have risen.
  • Do not overdrive conditions. Assume all roads that appear wet are slick.
  • Reduce your speed and always use your headlights.
  • Be patient; remember that many fellow drivers are not comfortable driving in adverse weather conditions.
  • Take it slow on bridges, ramps, and overpasses, and other known trouble spots.
  • Ensure gas tanks and windshield wiper fluid tanks are full.
