It’s hard to think about spring temperatures with the blustery cold temperatures outside, but now is the time to start planning for a spring sale. Against the cliché’s advice, many homebuyers do judge a book by its cover, and your home’s exterior is the cover. Sellers must create an exterior that leaves buyers wanting to come in and see more. Here are a few places to start.
Clean Things Up
Despite the cooler temps, there are plenty of clean-up projects you can handle now. Schedule a pressure washing on an above-freezing day. Getting the layers of dirt off provides wonderful facelifts for homes.
You can also pay some attention to your flower beds and landscaping. Pull weeds and dead annuals, if you haven’t already, and trim back appropriate perennials. Shape hedges, and use an edging tool along sidewalks and beds to give them a clean, crisp look.
Freshen Things Up
As winter winds down and temperatures warm up, handle any exterior painting or siding projects. Have your roof inspected and take a look at your gutter system to be sure it’s in good shape and functioning properly. You can get appointments scheduled now if repairs are needed, so there are a few less things to do in the spring before you list your home.
Now is also the time to plan for extra touches, so you’re ready when spring comes around. Consider new planters or pots for the front porch or steps, or tasteful feature items for your beds. If you fly a decorative flag, make sure the one you have out is in good shape and not faded.
Brighten Things Up
Plan an evening to enter your home as if you were a potential buyer. Pay close attention to exterior lighting and the condition of your fixtures. Winter is a great time for a quick fixture switch out, bulb replacements and even choosing walkway lighting to add in the spring. In early spring, the days will just be starting to lengthen. You’ll want to make sure your home is well lit at all times, allowing buyers to get a good look no matter when they drive by.
Spring is only a little over a month away. Get a jump on entering the busy spring housing market, and start your preparations now.
