A team from Ronald Reagan Middle School capped off a successful season with a second place win at the 2018 Odyssey of the Mind World finals. The tournament, hailed as the world’s largest creative solving competition, was held at Iowa State University. More than 835 elementary, middle school, high school, and college teams from around the world were challenged to solve complex problems before a panel of judges and a large international audience.
One of 34 teams representing Virginia, the Reagan team competed against 62 other middle schools, winning silver medals for the team and a trophy for the school. The Reagan team is the first middle school team from Prince William County to have competed and placed in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals. The team advanced to the World Finals by winning first place in both the regional and state competitions.
To win second place, the team created an entertaining mockumentary that introduced new plot elements to a classic story through behind-the-scenes action, interviews, conflicting perspectives, flashbacks, and a witness character that revealed to the audience what really happened in the reinterpreted tale.
The team is coached by Michael Heilen, a parent of two of the team members, and consists of seventh and eighth graders from Reagan. Team members are Anya Mischel, Maria Chica, Mayna Malhotra, Michael Machosky, Naomi Heilen, Sophia Heilen, and Umi Komine.
