Lane Closures, Periodic Stoppages on I-66 Overnight this Weekend

Provided by Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)
Drivers can expect overnight lane closures and periodic stoppages on eastbound and westbound I-66 between I-495 and Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) Friday and Saturday nights, July 20 and 21, for crews to remove overhead gantries.
Details include:
Friday, July 20: Westbound I-66 Between I-495 and Route 123
  • Temporary closure of the three left lanes between 9:00 p. m. and 5:00 a. m.
  • Periodic stoppages of up to 15 minutes between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 a. m. between Nutley Street and Route 123 to remove two overhead gantries.
Saturday, July 21: Eastbound I-66 Between I-495 and Route 123
  • Temporary closure of the three left lanes between 9:00 p. m. and 5:00 a. m.
  • Periodic stoppages of up to 15 minutes between 12:00 midnight and 2:00 a. m. between Nutley Street and Route 123 to remove one overhead gantry.
The overhead gantries include the speed advisory and “red x/green arrow” signs from the Active Traffic Management System and must be removed to allow for I-66 express lanes construction.  When the signs are turned off Friday evening, July 20, the shoulder lane will be made available as a fourth travel lane during peak periods and at other hours when not needed for construction-related lane closures.
Current HOV-2 rules continue to remain in effect for the HOV lane during the posted hours.
