Groundbreaking for “Prince William Parkway” Elementary School: Update

Provided by Prince William County Schools (PWCS)

Updated on Sept. 12, 2018: The groundbreaking ceremony for the “Prince William Parkway” Elementary School scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 13, has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date. The postponement was necessitated by the condition of the site as well as prediction of heavy rain on Sept. 13.

The School Board, other elected officials, and members of the community are expected to attend a groundbreaking ceremony for the county’s newest elementary school at 4060 Prince William Parkway on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 8:00 a. m. Those who plan to attend should reach the site via Minnieville Road to avoid a U-turn on the Parkway during the morning rush hour. The event is open to the public.

The site includes 15.06 acres that PWCS purchased, plus 2.12 acres from Chinn Park, which the County transferred to PWCS for construction of a soccer field. The school is not yet named.

The construction team has been working closely with civil engineers in planning the site, Mosely Architects in designing the structure, and Dustin Construction in building the school.

“It’s another challenge the PWCS Office of Facilities Services has taken on and met with good planning and skill,” said Wayne Mallard, interim associate superintendent for Finance and Support Services.

“I look forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders in the community to create a caring and nurturing school culture in which we celebrate diversity, and a World Class community in which students are exposed to a variety of opportunities to reach their social and academic potential,” said Principal Marlene Coleman.

The building itself will be approximately 100,000 square feet, which is comparable to other recently constructed elementary schools. The school will be similar in design to Haymarket and Gravely Elementary Schools, with an anticipated program capacity of 710 students, depending on the composition of the student population and school boundaries. The attendance boundary for the school has not yet been determined.
