Sentara Highlights Mammography Services

By Helena Tavares Kennedy

Sponsored by Sentara

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center offers mammography services and wants everyone in the community knows about life-saving tools it has to offer.

Sentara Healthcare has five locations: Ultrasound Associates Alexandria, Sentara Lake Ridge, Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, Lorton Station and a mobile mammography unit, which offer 3D mammography, a state-of-the-art tool for screening and prevention. For over six years, mobile mammography services  have been offered to the community.

“The program started in May 2012 and saw approximately 800 women the first year. We have been growing annually and currently see an average of 1,100 women a year,” explains Yvonne Barber, Operations Coordinator for Mobile Mammography at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center.

Mammography Event

In an effort to continue Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center’s mission to Improve Health Every Day and help in the fight against breast cancer, Sentara is sponsoring events during October where the mobile mammography unit will be on site.

Sentara’s mobile mammography unit will be at Duck Donuts in Woodbridge, 15101 Potomac Town Pl #140 (at Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center) on Friday, Oct. 19 from 7:30-10:30 a. m. In addition, they will be giving away pink goodies and serving up fresh donuts!

Registration is not required, but it is encouraged. To schedule your appointment with the mobile mammography unit or for more information, call 703-523-1560. The “Mammovan,” as it’s affectionately called, traditionally screens women 40 and over, but on some occasions can screen women 35-39 who have a family history of breast cancer, if they have a physician’s order.

“Before the program, we heard things like, I don’t have transportation, it takes too long, there isn’t a place close to me or my job or I have to take a half-day off work to drive down the highway,” said Barber. “We have removed those barriers with the mobile mammography unit. We come to you, right to your neighborhood, church, medical clinic, school or work place. The women schedule an appointment; they are in and out within 15 minutes and on their way. You can call me at 703-523-1997 directly or e-mail, [email protected] to find out how we can get the “Mammovan” to your location.”

Financial Assistance and Help with Insurance

Are you worried about affording a mammogram? Sentara works with patients and bills insurance for mammograms. If you don’t have insurance, Sentara Healthcare has a financial assistance program and will provide you with the application form at your mammogram.
