350 NVCC and high school students to attend InNOVAtion Hackathon

Approximately 300 students from Northern Virginia Community College and other colleges, interested locals and 50 local high school students have registered to attend NOVA’s first ever hackathon event,  inNOVAtion. The 36-hour competition will focus on offering hands-on experience to promote cybersecurity through analyzing secure coding methods. Keynote speakers will be Brig. Gen. Kevin Nally, Chief Information Officer for the U.S. Secret Service and Dr. Ray Letteer, U.S. Marine Corps Senior Information Security Official (SISO).

 In addition to the competition, the following highly-trained cybersecurity experts will speak to high school students on topics involving computer science and information technology through “Tech Talks:”

  • Marvin Marin, program manager & cybersecurity expert, Haystax
  • Wayne Stilwell, CEO, Stilwell Technology and Robotics, LLC
  • Frances Coronel, senior, computer science major, Hampton University
  • Ron Haddox, owner/WordPress developer, On the Pike Networks
  • Christine de Souza, director, Cyber Security Forum Initiative
  • Tony Erskine, software developer and consultant

The hackathon will be held April 8-10 at the Regional Center for Workforce Education and Training (RCWET) on Northern Virginia Community College’s Woodbridge Campus, 2645 College Drive, Woodbridge, Virginia 22191. Free parking is available on the RCWET lot. Participants will be housed in the RCWET for the duration of the competition.

A hackathon is an event of any duration where interested volunteers come together to solve problems creatively using technology. PWL At inNOVAtion, each participant will learn about programming, technology and security by applying each skill to complete challenges for a chance to win prizes.

The Regional Center for Workforce Education and Training (RCWET) is a 55,000 square-foot state-of-the-art building that serves as the epicenter of high-quality training and education delivery, creating a workforce to meet the technological demands of Northern Virginia businesses, government and military communities. Training programs provided will include Cybersecurity, Healthcare, IT, Program Management and more, allowing area employers and their employees to expand their professional expertise. The Regional Center also houses a Professional Testing Center and 7,500 square-foot conference center designed to host a range of events from industrial-type training, exhibits, trade shows, formal gatherings and special events.
