SCORE recognized three small business owners this week for their extraordinary entrepreneurial efforts, naming them Grand Champions of the American Small Business Championship (ASBC). The ASBC is a national competition hosted by SCORE, made possible with a grant from Sam’s Club, to celebrate small business success and help them access the resources required for continued business growth.

For the first time in the competition’s four-year history, three small businesses took the top honors, each winning $25,000 to help grow their businesses. Competitive Edge Athletic Performance Center of Woodbridge, along with businesses in upstate New York and in New Mexico, won the awards.

Competitive Edge Athletic Performance Center is a minority-owned multi-sports facility founded by Monte Evans, designed to train youth and focus on the “complete athlete” – which means excelling in athletics and academics. In addition to offering a multitude of sports and performance training, Competitive Edge also offers educational programs like SAT/ACT prep courses and tutoring.

Talking about the positive impact his business makes on the community, Evans said, “Competitive Edge is a development and sports performance training program dedicated to male and female youth athletes ages 4 -18. Competitive Edge is a staple in the community for athletic training to over 1,000 youth in Woodbridge per week. Competitive Edge’s mission is to develop the complete athlete, encouraging youth to stay ahead of the game in athletics and academics giving them a Competitive Edge. Our student athletes will enhance their athletic performance and develop a competitive edge to excel in their desired sport. Competitive Edge student athletes’ will see benefits such as, an improvement in their speed, strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination, increased attention and focus, and weight management.

“A $1,000 Sam’s Club gift card, training, and help from a SCORE mentor would help me launch an “Edge Athlete Pantry.” The Pantry will be fully stocked with water, low-sugar, non-carbonated sports drinks, a blender with easy to follow smoothie recipes, fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as convenient organic, healthy carbohydrate snacks. We would use a $1,000 to complete the launch of our Edge Athlete Pantry. A mentor will guide Competitive Edge in becoming a scalable business, while maintaining its excellent customer service and family-like atmosphere that clients have grown accustomed to and love.”

“The American Small Business Championship, supported by Sam’s Club, is an unparalleled program driving small business growth and sustainability. We are so gratified to have three exceptionally hardworking Grand Champions this year, embodying a diverse snapshot of the American small business landscape,” said Resa Kierstein, vice president of development for SCORE.
