On Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017, several hundred people will gather at Harbour View, Occoquan Harbour Marina, and Blu 1681 Restaurant to learn about plans for new passenger service on the Occoquan, Potomac, and Anacostia Rivers. Government, industry, military, and academic leaders will share with the public plans on the launch of this new transit service in the National Capital Region (Suburban Maryland, Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia). All events are open and free. RSVPs are required at

“The Fast Ferry Summit is an opportunity for the region to incorporate an underutilized asset – our river system – into our overburdened transportation system. Northern Virginia is projected to grow by double digits by 2040 and we already have some of the worst traffic in the country. We need innovative solutions to address this growing problem. Getting commuters out of their vehicles and putting them on the river will be a giant step forward towards the goal of a truly multi-modal transportation system,” said Supervisor Frank J. Principi, Prince William Board of County Supervisors. “Fast ferry service will also enhance of emergency preparedness and homeland security capacity, promote tourism, and support economic development in the region,” said Supervisor Principi.

The Summit will also include presentations on the preliminary findings of the fourth study on fast ferry service in this region focused on shoreside infrastructure needs, e.g., passenger terminals, parking, lighting, etc. The on-going study, commissioned by the Northern Virginia Regional Commission and conducted by Nelson Nygaard, details the shore-side infrastructure needs of Prince William County, and other locations along the Potomac River.

The Summit is also an opportunity to hear from the new Maritime Administrator, experience a ride on-board a fast ferry, and network with individuals involved in the planning efforts. New fast ferry service will begin in October 2017 to/from the Wharf, Georgetown, Alexandria, and National Harbor/MGM Hotel.

The event is co-hosted by the Northern Virginia Regional Commission and the Woodbridge Potomac Communities Civic Association. Information about the Fast Ferry Summit and instructions to RSVP your attendance is at or 703.792.4646.
