As part of the ongoing revitalization of Action in Community Through Service (ACTS), this week saw the launch of its brand new full service website. Designed to cater to the needs of multiple target audiences, the new actspwc.org is simple to navigate and clear in its presentation.
Unique among websites for human services organizations, the ACTS website presents its services differently depending on the audience. Special care is taken to speak directly to those needing assistance. Rather than having to read about services in the third person, clicking the “Need Help?” button on the home page takes visitors to a special section that speaks to them directly in a more conversational tone.
For example, if someone is seeking safety from an abusive relationship, she may not care that “services include an 18-bed shelter, court advocacy and accompaniment, crisis counseling…” Such descriptive information is found in the About Us section describing ACTS services. When a mother is in crisis, she wants to be reassured that “If you need immediate safety, ACTS safe house is available anytime day or night. Located in a residential neighborhood, its location is confidential and provides comfortable shelter and support for you and your children.”
Similarly, ACTS CEO Steve Liga points out, “A parent needing assistance with feeding his children will appreciate reading, ‘You and your children will receive up to a week’s worth of groceries, including fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meat, bread and other staples, and even a birthday cake if you need one.’ He continues, “The fact that ‘In FY16, the Food Pantry was able to assist 8,529 local households (700 per month) by providing 610,624 pounds (51,000 per month) of food,’ is not particularly important if your child is hungry today.”
Another major section accessed from the home page describes multiple ways individuals or groups can support ACTS. Not only can monetary donations be handled directly through the site, individuals can find out exactly what to put in an Essentials Kit for a family in the shelter or read about specific volunteer opportunities and then apply for the positions online.
Of course, it wouldn’t be an ACTS website if there wasn’t a special section for its Thrift Store. As the only non-profit thrift store in the region that reinvests all proceeds into services provided for the local community, people want to know what to donate just as much as they want to know what latest treasure may be waiting for them.
