An adopted fire hydrant in 2016

The Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue, in conjunction with Prince William County Home Depot stores, are soliciting community assistance during our Adopt-A-Hydrant program from December through March. This program will enable residents and/or businesses to adopt a fire hydrant close to their home or business and maintain the area around the hydrant keeping it free of snow during the winter and free of weeds and shrubbery in the summer.

In the event of a fire, it is vital that fire and rescue crews are able to quickly gain access to the water supply to extinguish the fire and prevent the loss of life and/or property. We ask that Prince William County citizens shovel the area around their adopted fire hydrant after each snowfall by clearing a three-foot path around the hydrant as well as clearing a path from the street/roadway up to the hydrant so it is visible and accessible to fire and rescue crews.

Upon registering, residents will receive an “Adoption Certificate.” This certificate can be redeemed at any of the PWC Home Depot Service Desks for a free Hydrant SNOW STICK to mark their adopted fire hydrant. Once they have received the snow stick, they place it near the adopted hydrant and wait for the snow to fall. To register, complete the online application at Please send the completed application to
