Manassas City Public Schools to Host community meetings to discuss future planning and redistricting

Manassas City Public Schools (MCPS) will host two community dialogues, “Planning for the Future: A Discussion on Redistricting” to review proposed redistricting options for elementary and intermediate schools beginning in the fall of 2016. The discussions will be held in two sessions:

Grades Pre-K through 4: Monday, February 15, 2016, 7:00-9:00 p.m., Mayfield Intermediate School, 9400 Mayfield Court, Manassas, VA 

Grades 5 and 6: Tuesday, February 16, 2016, 7:00-9:00 p.m., Mayfield Intermediate School, 9400 Mayfield Court, Manassas, VA

During the community engagements, Citygate GIS, a consulting company based in Annapolis, Maryland, will share recommendations to redistrict based on an intensive study of student capacity and facilities in Manassas City Public Schools. PWL  The recommendations to redistrict will impact the division’s five elementary schools and Baldwin and Mayfield Intermediate schools. 

“Manassas City Public Schools has experienced tremendous growth over the last few years,” said Catherine Magouyrk, Superintendent of Schools.  “In order for the division to balance the enrollment needs of our current and future students, proper planning must be in place, which includes making sure that our facilities are able to handle the growth.”

After the community engagements, the School Board will follow the timeline below:

  • February 23, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. (City Hall) – School Board Meeting and Redistricting Presentation
  • March 29, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. (City Hall) – School Board Meeting and Public Hearing on Pre-K through 4th Grade Redistricting
  • March 30, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. (City Hall) – Public Hearing on Grades 5 and 6 Redistricting
  • April 12, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. (City Hall) – School Board Meeting for Final Approval to Alter School  Boundaries

Community members and school division staff and families are encouraged to attend the community dialogues to participate in the discussion of planning for the future of Manassas City Public Schools.
