The Arches Gallery Artists announces the winners of the Oct. 2018 People’s Choice Award. These were chosen from the current exhibition in their gallery in Building W9 at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton.
Arches has 20 artists of varying artistic disciplines. The People’s Choice winners were chosen during the monthly 2nd Saturday Art Walk on Oct. 13.
Michael Kroetch (First Place)
Artwork: “Fynshav”
Michael Kroetch is originally from Oregon. His artworks in various media have earned top honors in the USA and been exhibited in several countries across Europe. “Fynshav” is named after a tiny town in Denmark, a harbor where he waited with his future wife to catch a ferry to the tiny island of Aero, where they would soon be married. The piece depicts a sunrise and hints at the great joy and sea journey waiting ahead.”
“Frenchie” by Gene Moty

Gene Moty is an emerging artist working with the finest traditional materials to create a new language of abstract minimalism. Inspired by the historic Bauhaus and De Stijl art movements, his “less is more” philosophy and pure clean style engages the viewer to soak up, explore, and enjoy his unique oil paintings. “Frenchie” is a painting that was inspired by one of Gene’s close friends. It has quickly become one of his iconic pieces that always gets a smile from the viewer. This painting epitomizes Gene’s unique minimalist style. It was done in oil on a 18” by 29” stretched Belgian linen canvas. Rick Reda has been a photographer for over forty years. Specializing in landscapes and wildlife, he has traveled from Alaska to Antarctica to Africa. He started with a makeshift darkroom set up in the bathroom of a two-bedroom apartment in Detroit, developing and producing color prints. Within a few short years, his photographs were on display in the Trimpe Gallery in Detroit. Over the years he has transitioned from film photography to digital photography. He is currently has work displayed in The Loft Gallery in Occoquan, Arches Gallery at the Workhouse in Lorton, as well as in several private collections across the United States and in Europe. “River of Rocks” by Kathleen Best Gillman
Kathleen Best Gillmann (Third Place – Tie)

Award-winning artist Kathleen Best Gillmann maintains her studio in Northern Virginia and has a growing reputation for painting landscapes and waterscapes. Her paintings have accumulated numerous awards over the years. In January 2018, “March Thaw” took Best in Show at the Art League’s Open Exhibit. In 2017, “River View” took First Place at the “Best of the Region” exhibit in Manassas. I have been on Parsons Beach in all types of weather and at various points in the tide cycle. This particular day there was a marked contrast between the foggy, far-off vegetation in the dunes and the crisp forms and colors of the rocks in the foreground. This “River of Rocks” is not visible when the tide is high, so a visit to the beach at low tide offered this engaging vision.”
