Ashland Elementary Supports Military Families

Prince William County is a home for many military families due to the proximity of several military bases. Many students’ parents are deployed while stationed here. Ashland Elementary School third-grade teacher Rachel Baxter and school counselor Sarah Leclercq created the Operation Hometown Heroes program to give students a chance to create and send special care packages to their parents serving overseas.

Baxter and Leclercq solicited the community for donations of snacks, toiletries, books, games and various other comfort items. The packages are assembled by the students, who include a letter to their parent and a few pieces of schoolwork. The packages also contain a T-shirt that says, “Half of my heart is at Ashland Elementary.”

“I am a military wife, and my son attends Ashland Elementary. He doesn’t realize the difficulty of our lifestyle because of the positive school community we have for military families,” Baxter shared. “I wanted to support these students and show them that you are special, and we recognize you and your sacrifices.”

Ashland Elementary plans to continue this program next school year. If you are interested in donating items, please contact Rachel Baxter, baxterrj@pwcs.edu or Sarah Leclercq, leclersl@pwcs.edu.
