Emily Wu-Rorrer of Cakes By Happy Eatery went on WJLA’s Good Morning Washington earlier today to celebrate another of this year’s hottest trends: the StayCation, and the “destination” the bakery is recommending is Hawaii!
“You can’t go wrong with a Hawaiian Luau,” says Wu-Rorrer. “Pipe in some Hawaiian music, pass out the Leis and some strategically placed tiki torches can transform a Virginia backyard to posh spot-on Oahu! Go for the vibrant island vibe in all your decor.”
Island inspired food is key, and things like Spam Masubi (two Island staples) are a good starting point. Huli-Huli Chicken (essentially Hawaiian BBQ) and Macaroni Salad are also simple and fit the theme.
“Classic desserts that work well are things like Butter Mochi,” says Wu-Rorrer, “or Coconut Haupia, which is essentially coconut milk-based pudding. I also like Poi which is sweet Taro paster and also has a thick, pudding-esque texture.”
