Proud Veteran Receives Critical Home Repairs

BAE Systems Manassas VeteranManassas, Va. (June 27, 2013) – Habitat for Humanity of Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park is currently making critical home repairs at the home of Michael and Crystal Levine of Manassas. Michael served in the U.S. Marine Corps and now works for a government agency and Crystal is a stay-at-home mother.

Unexpected out-of-pocket medical expenses for their daughter quickly mounted immediately after moving into their home. Simultaneously, they discovered several problems with their home including rotting trim, loose gutters, water leaks, damaged and inefficient windows and doors and a faulty HVAC system in need of replacement. The family’s time and financial commitment to their daughter’s medical issues, coupled with the overwhelming and growing list of necessary home repairs, made it virtually impossible for them to manage everything that needed to be addressed.

Although he found it difficult to consider that his family was ‘in need’, Michael made the decision to apply for Habitat for Humanity’s Critical Home Repairs for Veterans program to make sure his family has a safe and comfortable home in which to live.

On Friday, June 21, 14 employees from BAE Systems in Manassas descended on the home to provide volunteer labor for this Critical Home Repair for Veterans project. BAE Systems’ generous Raise the Roof Sponsorship of $6,900 is helping Habitat to buy the materials and make the needed repairs for this hard-working family. Their donation included a volunteer worksite day, which helps keep labor costs down. BAE Systems volunteers worked with Habitat for Humanity to replace 80-feet of fencing, replace and paint the rotting fascia and paint the trim and gutters on the back of the house. The photo gallery of BAE Systems’ workday shows how much work they were able to accomplish.

“Supporting Veterans in our communities is a priority for BAE Systems,” says Gino Manzo, director of Microelectronics Technology and Products at BAE Systems and Habitat for Humanity board member. “We’re proud to support Habitat’s mission of giving a helping hand to our Veterans and community members.”
