Jonathan Robson, the 2017 valedictorian at Battlefield High School, says he learned his most important life lessons through volunteering in his local community. From his perspective, “Service is more than earning any personal reward – it is seeing a difference and a positive impact on others.”

Since his sophomore year in high school, Robson has been a volunteer at Gravely Elementary School with the French Club and the Running Club, as well as working as a robotics referee and a lifeguard. He found that he would encounter the elementary students at different places throughout the community and saw how he was able to impact those same students as he worked with them in different ways. Robson stated, “I would see one child at Running Club, then I may have been their referee or their lifeguard on the weekends. This was personally significant to me, as I found that all the service and involvement I had in the community was giving fruitful returns that made me feel the tangible difference that I was making in these children’s’ lives.”
