“The practice of reading and writing is very important to me… When my kids are sick, I worry. I need to be able to understand what my doctor says and the instruction for taking the medicine. Also, when my children’s teachers mail me a letter, I need to understand. I want to help them.” Fatema, BEACON student
BEACON for Adult Literacy is a nonprofit that empowers adult language learners like Fatema. As a mother of four from Afghanistan, she is studying English to create a better future for herself and her family. Our ESOL and ceducation program serves more than 400 adults like Fatema each year. BEACON helps learners overcome language barriers to communicate better with their children’s teachers, obtain and retain employment, become U.S. citizens and become more active in the community.
