Wedding cakes are one of the most iconic elements of a wedding celebration. In the United States, the design of wedding cakes reflects a rich tapestry of cultural influences, traditions, and personal styles.
According to Emily Wu, award-winning wedding cake designer and co-owner of Cakes by Happy Eatery bakery in Manassas, couples seek to express their unique stories and identities through their cakes. “Bridal couples want to make their cakes more personal by adding a touch of their culture, either through flavor or design, making them more meaningful,” she said.
Here are some common cultural influences that have shaped wedding cake designs in the U.S.
European Traditions
Many wedding cake designs in the U.S. have roots in European traditions, particularly from England and France. The classic tiered cake, often adorned with intricate fondant or royal icing designs, hails from British customs, where higher tiers symbolize prosperity. The use of fruitcake, once popular in British weddings, has also been adopted but has largely transitioned to lighter cake flavors such as vanilla, chocolate, or even red velvet.
French influence is evident in the use of delicate pastries like croquembouche, a towering structure of cream puffs filled with pastry cream and bound together with caramel. This visually stunning alternative has gained popularity among couples looking to add a touch of elegance to their wedding dessert tables.

Regional Flavors and Styles
As the United States is a melting pot of cultures, regional flavors and styles have emerged in wedding cake designs. For instance, Southern weddings often feature cakes made with unique ingredients such as pecans, peaches, or bourbon, reflecting the area’s agricultural heritage. Red velvet cake, a Southern staple, regularly makes an appearance at weddings, often dressed with cream cheese frosting.
In the Pacific Northwest, couples may opt for more rustic designs incorporating nature-inspired elements like wood accents, floral decorations, and even organic, locally sourced ingredients. This trend mirrors a broader cultural shift towards sustainability and farm-to-table practices and is popular for those seeking more rustic looks.
Ethnic Heritage and Culture
Many couples incorporate their ethnic cultural backgrounds into their wedding cake designs. “We had a bride that wanted to incorporate her Polish heritage into the desserts, so she gave us her family recipe to recreate her grandmother’s cookies. It’s those touches that couples embrace to make their wedding their own,” said Wu.

Other cultural and ethnic influences include:
Hispanic Traditions – Hispanic weddings often feature tres leches cake, a moist sponge cake soaked in three types of milk, providing a sweet and indulgent flavor. These cakes are frequently adorned with beautiful fresh fruits, whipped cream, or elaborate decorations reminiscent of traditional Hispanic artistry.
Italian Influence – Italian weddings might showcase a traditional Italian wedding cake called “Millefoglie,” a layered pastry filled with cream and fruits, or the beloved “Cassata,” a cake made with layers of sponge cake soaked in liqueur, ricotta cheese, and candied fruits. These cakes can be decorated with marzipan or vibrant colors, symbolizing celebration and joy.
Jewish Traditions – Jewish weddings traditionally feature a cake called “challah,” shaped like a round loaf, representing continuity. Additionally, some couples may choose a multi-layered cake with flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, or marble, adorned with designs symbolizing their Jewish heritage, like stars of David or floral motifs.
Indian Weddings – Indian weddings are known for their vibrant colors and rich flavors. Couples might opt for traditional spice-infused cakes, such as cardamom or saffron-flavored layers. Cakes may also feature bright, intricate designs reflecting henna patterns, and sometimes include elements like fresh mango or pistachio to celebrate the couple’s heritage.

Asian Influences – Asian couples may incorporate traditional cakes such as the Chinese “Baker’s Cake” (a combination of layered sponge cake and fruit), often adorned with symbols of good fortune. Asian flavors like matcha (green tea) or black sesame are also becoming increasingly popular in wedding cakes across the U.S. Additionally, Korean couples may opt for “Baekseolgi,” a fluffy, light cake traditionally served at celebrations, often layered and beautifully decorated.

Modern Trends and Personalization
In recent years, there has been a significant movement toward personalization in wedding cake design. Couples increasingly aim for unique and visually striking cakes that tell their stories. This can manifest in the use of unconventional shapes, bold colors, or artistic elements like hand-painted designs and metallic accents.
Another modern influence is the trend toward minimalism, with many couples opting for clean lines and simple decorations. Naked cakes, which are cakes with minimal frosting that allow the layers to show, have become a popular choice, symbolizing a more rustic and casual approach to wedding celebrations.
Influences from Social Media
The rise of social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest has further transformed wedding cake design by allowing couples to share and discover the latest trends. Cakes that trend on social media may feature eye-catching designs, elaborate sugar flowers, or even unconventional flavors that appeal to a broader audience. This sharing culture encourages creativity and experimentation, pushing bakers and couples to redefine traditional notions of what a wedding cake can be.
“Wedding cakes are iconic, but our couples want them to be unique and more personal, adding in more intimate details that reflect their journey,” Wu said.
