Birmingham Green is marking 97 years of care, community, and innovation—and they’re celebrating the milestone the best way they know how: by opening their doors to neighbors of all ages for a free, family-friendly birthday party.

“In times of uncertainty, it matters that people know Birmingham Green is a steadfast guardian of care for older adults in Northern Virginia,” says Robert Hahn, Chief Advancement Officer. “In our 97 years, we’ve been through it all—we weather storms and come out stronger. People need that reassurance now more than ever.”

Birminham Freen was ranked the number one nursing home in Northern Virgnia on the list of America’s Best Nursing Homes 2025 by Newsweek magazine.

A Legacy That Leads, Not Follows

Since opening nearly a century ago, Birmingham Green has evolved alongside health care and society itself. The organization is known for staying at the forefront of technology, science, and—most importantly—human-centered care.

“We’ve never been content to be merely a safety net for low-income seniors—though we are that,” Hahn explains. “We set trends and often the standards for senior care, from our dementia-supporting Vibrant Minds Menu to tele-health, free CNA training, and Elder Fraud Abuse education.”

Asked about the key to Birmingham Green’s longevity, Hahn doesn’t hesitate: “Our people—pure and simple. Across every role, we attract and invest in the best. The passion to care for a too-often marginalized segment of our society runs high here. That, and leadership committed to excellence, is our secret sauce.”

Party with a Purpose

Why celebrate with a community-wide party? “Because we want to be a resource for everyone,” Hahn says. “America is approaching its largest cohort of senior citizens in history. People have a lot of questions about elder care—we have a lot of information to share. Whether or not someone has a loved one here, we want them to feel welcome.”

What’s Happening at the Party

Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025 • 2 to 5 p.m.
Birmingham Green, 8605 Centreville Road, Manassas, VA

  • Live music
  • Moon bounce and kids’ climbing wall
  • Face painting, balloon twisters, junior striker game
  • Free sweet treats: cupcakes, ice cream sundaes, sno-cones, popcorn, cotton candy
  • Yard games: corn hole and giant tic-tac-toe
  • Free raffle (must be present to win): a tablet, a scooter, plus McDonald’s and Dairy Queen gift cards

“It’s entirely free and truly family-focused,” Hahn notes. “Anytime we bring people together to celebrate, it creates connection—and intergenerational connection is vital for any community.”

More Than Care—A Family

Residents and families say the Birmingham Green difference is community. “Many residents don’t have local family,” Hahn says. “We become their family. Community is a proven ingredient for a rich life at any age.”

The organization’s nationally recognized Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program is one example of impact beyond campus walls. “We train high-school grads or GED holders 100% free—books, supplies, tuition,” Hahn says. “In a few months, graduates can earn strong wages with no debt and a clear career pathway. With a nationwide shortage of CNAs, it’s life-changing.”

Eyes on 100

With 54 acres, Birmingham Green is planning thoughtfully for the future. “As our centennial approaches, we want to expand resident housing, add a training facility, and continue adopting technology without ever losing the human touch,” Hahn says. “Every year from now until 100 is a dress rehearsal for the celebration to come.”
