In the 58 years since Prince William school crossing guards have been working directing traffic and protecting children at school crossings, no child in Prince William County has been seriously injured or killed on their way to school.

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors recently recognized the county’s crossing guards and named Feb. 9 as School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.

The county’s professional school crossing guards, all highly qualified men and women, are fully trained and prepared for the challenges of protecting children on their way to school and training children in pedestrian safety.

The board’s proclamation stated that “It is proper and fitting that we give special recognition to those men and women who provide an invaluable service to our community, sometimes under adversarial, dangerous, or hostile conditions in the performance of their duties.”

The board also encouraged people to make efforts to let crossing guards, who help make Prince William County a safe place to live, work, and play, know that they are appreciated.
