Few historians have examined what happened to the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac during the critical months following Gettysburg, when both armies assumed the offensive in a pair of fascinating campaigns of thrust and counter-thrust. This careful study breaks down
these campaigns (and all related operational maneuvers) into 13 map sets or “action-sections” enriched with 87 original full-page color maps. These spectacular cartographic creations bore down to the regimental and battery level in The Maps of the Bristoe Station and Mine Run Campaigns: An Atlas of the Battles and Movements in the Eastern Theater after Gettysburg, Including Rappahannock Station, Kelly’ s Ford, and Morton’ s Ford, July 1863 – February 1864.
Dr. Bradley M. Gottfried holds a Ph.D. in Zoology from Miami University. He has worked in higher education for more than three decades as a faculty member and administrator. He is currently President of the College of Southern Maryland.
Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park Manager Rob Orrison is looking forward to the anniversary events, and the release of The Maps of the Bristoe Station and Mine Run Campaigns. “Bradley Gottfried fills a crucial gap in our understanding of what transpired in Virginia after the battle of Gettysburg and before the Overland Campaign. His detailed and easy-to-read maps, coupled with his incisive narrative, allow readers to comprehend and fully appreciate the complicated, important, and largely overlooked Bristoe Station and Mine Run campaigns,” Orrison said.
