Boxes of Basics is thrilled to announce the Micron Foundation has awarded the organization $100,000 to support the purchase, packing and distribution of 8,000 essential hygiene kits along with a STEM activity to children in need throughout Northern Virginia. The kits will be distributed through Boxes of Basics’ vast network of over 150 local referral partners, including school social workers, family liaisons, shelters, and other nonprofit organizations.
This collaboration is part of Micron’s global Star Light volunteer initiative, during which all major Micron locations around the world are focused on volunteering and giving in their communities. Their Manassas event will include more than 1,000 Micron team members volunteering at their local facility on Dec. 9, 11, and 14 to assemble kits during a large-scale packing event in partnership with Boxes of Basics. This engagement is unique for Boxes of Basics. The organization is partnering with Micron to design kits that go beyond the traditional clothing kits to meet a child’s basic hygiene needs. The kits will include toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, deodorant, soap, and socks. Some kits will also include feminine hygiene supplies. In addition, every kit will feature an age-appropriate STEM activity to inspire curiosity and learning.

Boxes of Basics’ mission is to combat clothing insecurity by providing a seasonal wardrobe to local children in need. Each Box of Basics contains four school outfits, four play outfits, pajamas, a dressy outfit, new shoes, socks, underwear, a winter coat, a dental hygiene kit, and age-appropriate books. Every item is lovingly selected by volunteers and wrapped like a gift, allowing children to feel seen, valued, and confident.
Clothing insecurity is often an overlooked symptom of larger challenges—such as homelessness, foster care, or poverty. By partnering with trusted referral organizations, Boxes of Basics ensures that children’s privacy is protected and that families are connected to other vital community resources. Through this partnership with Micron, Boxes of Basics will expand its ability to meet not just clothing needs but hygiene and educational ones as well.
