On Sunday, June 4 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Great Mane Brewery, 6620 James Madison Highway, Haymarket, Boxes of Basics will celebrate volunteers who bring the gift of clothing to local children in need.

Boxes of Basics has been serving Prince William County youth since September 2018. The non-profit, created by Haymarket resident Sarah Tyndall, provides seasonal wardrobes to local children in need. In less than five years, this organization has provided clothing to thousands of local children in need. In 2023, over 700 local children have already received a Box of Basics! The demand for Boxes of Basics continues to increase and the grassroots operation is growing!

Boxes of Basics employs two part-time staff members, and the rest of the organization is run entirely by volunteers. “Our success and growth can be attributed completely to our amazing volunteers who show up in so many ways to get the job done. From bookkeeping, graphic design and legal support to sorting clothing, packing boxes and delivering Boxes of Basics all over Greater Prince William County, volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization, and we are excited to celebrate their contributions,” said Founder and Executive Director Sarah Tyndall

The mission of Boxes of Basics is to provide quality new and gently used clothing to local children in need and present the package in a way that the child feels like they are opening a gift. Quality clothing is collected through clothing drives throughout the county. Each unique Box of Basics includes an entire seasonal wardrobe including school outfits, play outfits, pajamas, one “Sunday best” outfit, new socks, new underwear, shoes, a winter jacket, dental kit and an age-appropriate book. Each outfit is hand selected, gently wrapped and labeled by a volunteer. The children who receive Boxes of Basics are carefully identified and referred by other local charities, churches, government, community, and school organizations. Once the boxes are packed, they are brought to the referring organization who delivers directly to the child.

Boxes of Basics is a 501(c)3 that provides clothing to children in need, from size newborns through 14/16 youth. They work with other organizations, schools, charities, and county government agencies to identify and serve local children in need. Boxes of Basics provides many ways to get involved including individual or group volunteer opportunities, hosting clothing, shoe, and winter coat drives, contributing monetary donations or shopping from their online Amazon wish list.
