PWCS will join school divisions across Virginia in getting newer buses retrofitted with an added interlock device to prevent parking brakes from disengaging accidentally. PWCS buses are safe without the feature, but the upgrade will add an extra layer of protection. Pre-2011 models will continue to operate without the interlock.

Virginia education officials say approximately 4,000 buses statewide need to be upgraded at manufacturer expense to meet the latest state specifications.

Upgrades to the majority PWCS fleet will begin shortly and continue throughout the summer. The work will not affect service to students.
