Founded in 1984 by Woei and Fu-Mei Wu, Cakes By Happy Eatery is run today by the Wu daughters – Victoria, Charlotte, and Emily. The sisters bake, create and design custom cakes for every occasion, and offer a savory menu that includes chicken pot pies, sandwiches and salads. While suffering a significant decline in business during the COVID-19 crisis, the Manassas-based store is certain in its determination to give back to the community during this time of need.

The second-generation full-service bakery currently operates with the modified hours (12:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday to Friday and 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday). They continue to offer a freshly baked menu on a daily basis, adjusting to meet the demands of curbside, walk-in and delivery options. “While major celebrations and events are being postponed, milestones are still being celebrated, such as birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and “welcome home baby.” The pastry showcase offers more than two dozen assortment of cupcakes and pastries to select from,” said Victoria Wu, General Manager of Cakes By Happy Eatery.

Donating To Local Charity And Beyond

“During these times, charity and gratitude are gifts we can give to the community and each other,” said Wu. With this sentiment, the bakery has partnered with a local non-profit, Action In Community Through Service (ACTS), to provide food for approximately 150 people every week. Cognizant of the fact that people might need that little bit of extra help during this time, the bakery has used its staff to create both sweet and savory treats for donation wherever they are most needed. Recently, the bakery has provided six-inch individually wrapped pot pies as well as strawberry shortcakes to ACTS, who distributes them where they see fit. “We alternate between a savory dish or a sweet treat every week,” said Wu.

Asked why the bakery selected ACTS to donate to, Wu said she called the best person she knew for advice on this–Rebecca Barnes of Prince William Living magazine– and she put her in contact with ACTS.

Donating to frontline workers is also important to the owners and staff at Cakes By Happy Eatery. “For the front line, we have donated custom designed sugar cookies that bring smiles. The designs include a stethoscope, heart shaped “heartbeat” cookies, and the timely masked emojis as well as simple ‘thank you’ cookies,” said Wu.

Targeting three hundred cookies per location, Wu and her staff work with area hospitals to coordinate delivery and distribution to different departments within the hospital. “We work with the hospital auxiliary club, the foundation or nursing department,” said Wu. “Our treats have been delivered to area hospitals including Novant, INOVA – Fairfax, Reston Hospital, and Virginia Hospital Center,” she said.

Cakes By Happy Eatery are continuing their donations and welcome recommendations on frontline workers who could use a little sweet treat. “We would like bring a special smile to people’s faces after working all day long,” said Wu.
