Caring for the Earth in Times of Crisis

When the world around you appears to be crumbling, it can be easy to forget that the environment around you still needs to be taken care of. Here are some ideas to continue to care for the earth even when experiencing the devastating effects of a global pandemic. (Don’t forget to take some time to admire the new blooms that are shyly appearing in a fantastic display of beauty!)

Trash and Recycling

Make sure you are following the most recent updates to your trash and recycling pick-up or drop-off.  If you live in the City of Manassas, check here for updates.  If you live in Prince William County, check here for Landfill updates. Be sure to put your trash out on the correct day to avoid any potential spillage.  Continue to place your waste and your recycling IN the bins, rather than on the ground. Be mindful that no bits and pieces run amok.

Denim Donations

Donate your old worn-out denim to a good cause. Basic Organization, a local home and office organization company, is collecting denim to send to Blue Jeans Go Green, a national denim recycling organization. Do you have denim to help them reach their goal of 100 items? Then email [email protected] or call 571-265-1303 to schedule a socially responsible pickup.

Litter still needs to be picked up.  KPWB is not currently hosting Community Litter Cleanups. They can still able to provide supplies to any individuals or families that would like to get outside.  KPWB will arrange supply drop-off. Just send an email to [email protected] to get set up.

Want a solo adventure? KWPB can email a Shopping Center Litter Survey form and do an over-the-phone program briefing to get you started.  Avoid contact with people and help KPWB keep an eye on the litter problem in shopping centers. What’s not to like?

Cleaning and Body Care Products

Making your own cleaning and body care products can prevent extra trips to the store. Wellness Mama is a good place to start. For a more in-depth experience in making your own products, KPWB recommends James Green’s The Herbal Medicine-Maker’s Handbook and Herbal Healing for Women by Rosemary Gladstar.

Walk in the Woods

Make time to simply walk in the woods.  Breathe deep the peace that trees exude and smile at all the blooming things.  Add a little challenge on some more strenuous terrain if you want more of a workout and to help your body focus on physical exertion.  Alltrails can help you plan your route, and Endomondo can help you track your hikes (and home workouts if you’re so inclined).

The Virus’s Effect on Global Climate Negotiations

Educate yourself on how the pollution is clearing and Earth is changing in light of this epidemic.  But, continue to educate yourself on how this virus may affect short- and long-term global climate negotiations.
