November kicks off with a pretty good day to recognize and celebrate. Nov. 1 is National Calzone Day.

Calzones originated in Naples, Italy and they look like a turnover, but inside, they are stuffed with cheese, pizza toppings and pizza sauce along with ricotta cheese. Technically, the toppings should be called stuffing since they are on the inside of the butter- and garlic-infused dough that offers extra flavor, according to nationaltoday,com/national-calzone-day/.

Calzones were ostensibly invented so that people could walk around while eating them. Realistically, trying to consume a calzone on foot would likely present problems since the contents tend to ooze out during the eating.

The popularity of calzones initially exploded when the television show “Seinfeld” carried a storyline about them. “Parks and Recreation” also aired several episodes about calzones throughout its run.

Celebrate National Calzone Day by throwing a calzone party. Make calzones. Sit down with friends and stuff yourself with the delicious, fresh from the oven, stuffed treat, or go to your favorite Italian restaurant and order one.
