At 103, Doris Woodring leads 13 other residents and staff from Westminster at Lake Ridge at the 2013 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics (NVSO) Sept. 7-19 in Northern Virginia. Ms. Woodring competes in three events—Scrabble, Dominoes and Wii Bowling.
“I never thought I’d be an Olympian being over 100 years old,” Woodring says. “I’m probably best in Scrabble, but I’ve also been practicing my Wii bowling.”
Woodring’s first event is Scrabble on Sept. 9, followed by Wii Bowling Sept. 10 and finishing with Dominoes-Mexican Train on Sept. 12.
Joining Woodring in Wii Bowling from Westminster at Lake Ridge is Shirley Crist, Dona Hobbs, “Lou” Martin, Betty Seybold, Harriet Way and Ed Seitz. Seitz is also participating in three events: 800 meter walk, eight ball pool and miniature golf.
Other residents from the retirement community’s team, Helen Fitzgerald and Carol Cornutt, compete in some of the most strenuous events. Fitzgerald participates in a three mile walk on Sept. 7 and Cornutt races in a half-mile swim Sept. 13.
Participants in NVSO must be 50 years of age and live in a sponsoring jurisdiction to be eligible. There are more than 50 events at 17 venues throughout Northern Virginia. For information go to www.nvso.us.
