FAIRFAX, Va., Oct. 16, 2013 – The 12 illustrious male voices known as Chanticleer ring in the holiday season with the ensemble’s cherished “A Chanticleer Christmas” concert, coming to two performing arts venues in Northern Virginia on Thanksgiving weekend.
Praised by Classics.com as “America’s a cappella pride and joy,” the Grammy Award-winning Chanticleer brings its magnificent Christmas concert filled with ancient hymns, venerated and sacred songs, classical works and a selection of festive and familiar carols and spirituals from Europe and America to George Mason University’s Center for the Arts in Fairfax on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013 at 8 p.m. as a part of the Center’s 2013-2014 Great Performances at Mason season. A pre-performance discussion, free to ticketholders, will be held 45 minutes prior to the performance on the Center’s Grand Tier III and is sponsored by the Friends of the Center for the Arts.
The ensemble also presents “A Chanticleer Christmas” at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013 at 4 p.m., as a part of the 2013-2014Hylton Presents season, which is sponsored by Novant Health. A pre-performance discussion, free to ticketholders, will be held 45 minutes prior to the performance in the Hylton Center’s Buchanan Partners Art Gallery.
The program for each concert will feature music spanning centuries and genres by such celebrated composers as Praetorius, Tavener, Sametz, Biebl, Rachmaninoff and Mendelssohn.
Called the “world’s reigning male chorus,” by New Yorker, Chanticleer has enchanted audiences the world over with the ensemble’s glorious voices, rapturous sound, impeccable technique and an astonishing mastery of more than a thousand years of vocal literature that includes everything from Gregorian chant and Renaissance music to jazz, gospel and contemporary sounds. Named for the “clear-singing” rooster in Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales,” Chanticleer was founded in 1978 by the late tenor Louis Botto. Now in its 36th season, the San Francisco-based ensemble has performed for countless audiences across the globe and has released numerous recordings, including its two Grammy Award-winning albums, “Colors of Love” and “Lamentations and Praises.” The ensemble’s latest studio album, “Someone New,” features a collection of jazz standards, classic rock tunes and indie-pop songs by such diverse artists as Gotye, Freddie Mercury, Peter Gabriel, Dave Brubeck, Tom Waits, M83, June Carter Cash and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Chanticleer has also released several Christmas albums, including “Sing We Christmas,” “Our Heart’s Joy” and “Our Favorite Carols,” as well as a DVD titled “Fireside Christmas with Chanticleer.”

Great Performances at Mason is a program of George Mason University’s Center for the Arts, the professional presentation and production arm of the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA).
