City of Manassas, VA . . . Over the last two weeks the City of Manassas government and Manassas City Public Schools have worked together to create summer career camps for rising freshman at Osbourn High School. Camps were held by the Manassas City Police Department, the Fire & Rescue Department and Old Towne Sports Pub.
During Police Camp, teens received hands-on experience with handling a radar device and conducting mock traffic stops. They watched officers demonstrate skill on motorcycles and K9/Officer interactions. Camp participants toured the animal shelter, the dispatch center andlearned some basic interview techniques. On the final day of camp, teens were treated to airsoft tactical drills and games ending with a pizza party.
At Fire & Rescue Camp, students learned what it takes to be a firefighter by donning the uniform in under 50 seconds, communicating on the radio, riding in a fire truck properly and using the fire hose to put out fires (pointing the hose at cones in the parking lot). They also learned CPR, basic first aid and other EMS related information. Teens also watched a medevac helicopter land and learned how teams work in a critical care situation. On the final day, teens were allowed to extinguish a fire and ended with a pizza party.
At the Old Towne Sports Pub, Culinary Arts Camp students learned all aspects of restaurant management. Teens followed food servers, cooks, and each took a turn as manager for the day. At the end of the camp students served their families a gourmet lunch in the side room.
This was the first year that the City of Manassas offered incoming freshmen the opportunity to explore possible career choices as they begin their high school journey. Camp participants and counselors both enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to next year.
