During the early morning of June 25, approximately 2,500 gallons of sodium hypochlorite unintentionally leaked from the hose of a suppliers’ truck at the City of Manassas Water Treatment Plant, located between Glenkirk and Rollins Ford Roads.
Staff on duty quickly noticed the spilled material and followed established emergency procedures. Their actions ensured that none of the material entered City or Prince William County waterways. During the response no injuries occurred. The spill was fully contained on site, and all affected material secured pending removal by a licensed disposal contractor.
There is no risk to the public or to the City’s drinking water supply, wildlife or aquatics in the area. Water quality remains safe, and the plant continues normal operations. County residents in proximity of the treatment plant may experience the faint odor of the material. Sodium hypochlorite is commonly used to disinfect drinking water.
The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency have been notified. Both agencies will review the incident and conduct any additional environmental assessments required
