Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (R-VA) released the following statement after Virginia’s Speaker of the House William J. Howell’s announcement that he will not seek re-election:

“Virginia’s Speaker of the House William J. Howell has served the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia for thirty years with great skill, wisdom, wit and dedication.  He is also a wonderful family man and a man of great faith. For 15 of those 30 years, he served as Speaker where he grew a strong Republican majority and established Virginia as a business friendly, low regulation, low tax, right to work state that welcomed the innovation economy of the 21st century.  In 2009, I was privileged to have Speaker Howell announce I was running for the House of Delegates to a crowded room before I had actually decided!  Not wanting to correct the Speaker, I went home and told my family I was running for Delegate. I was honored to serve the people of the 34th District for five years with the leadership and mentorship of Speaker Howell who is universally respected by his colleagues and constituents and a grateful Commonwealth.  I know he and his wife Cessie will continue to serve the Commonwealth in their next chapter.”
