The Prince William County Department of Transportation will host an open forum public hearing so people can provide input on the proposed location and design for the project to widen U.S. Route 1 between Featherstone Road and Mary’s Way. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 7:00 to 9:00 p .m. at Fred Lynn Middle School at 1650 Prince William Parkway in Woodbridge. People who attend the meeting will have the opportunity to give oral or written comments regarding the project.
In 2015, there were roughly 38,000 to 41,000 average daily trips along that stretch of U.S. 1 in Woodbridge. Those numbers are expected to expand to 55,000 to 59,000 average daily trips by 2040.
The $100-million improvement project will widen the existing, undivided four-lane highway to a six-lane, divided highway and will include a multi-use trail on the east side of U.S. 1 with a sidewalk on the west side of the road. The project will include traffic light synchronization and undergrounding utilities.
Information regarding the schedule of the 1.3-mile project will be discussed at the meeting. The initial environmental site assessments have been completed, and design should be finished in December 2017. Early rights-of-way acquisitions are scheduled to begin this January. Early construction, including utility relocation, is scheduled to begin in January 2018. Construction on the project is scheduled to be completed by April 2021.
The project will be funded by a combination of local, state and federal money, administered through the , Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, or NVTA, which was created in 2002 by the General Assembly as a regional body to develop the regional transportation plan and to address transportation issues in Northern Virginia. The NVTA manages public funds for transportation projects designed to reduce congestion throughout the region.
