Dr. Khendra Peay will share her story of specialization in Autism and Developmental Disabilities as she sits beside families and organizational leaders from across the region. She also wants to know what is important to you.

On July 1, 2013, Dr. Peay came from across state borders in Maryland to serve our community of special needs through Novant Health Prince William Medical Center in the department of Behavioral Health Outpatient Services. This October marks the second anniversary of a grassroots momentum by families of children with developmental delays and disabilities in Special Needs of Greater Piedmont to build medical services of the region in partnership with Novant Health Prince William Medical Center.
Special Needs of Greater Piedmont is a network dedicated to enriching the quality of life for children with developmental delays and disabilities in our community. Those touched by our extraordinary children have walked a different kind of journey as a family with special needs.
In 2011, the families first reached out to the local hospital and asked for support in Building the Medical Infrastructure in Greater Piedmont. Since then, we have joined in unity and common purpose with many local families and organizations in western Prince William County. Through this work, the organizational leaders have paradigmatically changed the nature of the experience in our community. These multi-layered efforts signify a profound progression for the local population, and serve as an archetype for other communities to emulate in the delivery of specialized healthcare.
The hospital has come together with families in a series of roundtable discussions, and is working to architect a healthcare infrastructure that directly addresses the needs raised by families of children across the region. In doing so, the hospital has evolved into an exemplar of the patient- and family-centered care model in the way the staff and hospital leadership have joined with grassroots initiatives and forever changed the healthcare landscape of our community.
This June, the coalition gathered again as part of an earth-shattering evolution for the community of special needs. Many exciting announcements were shared such as plans for diversity training for healthcare providers, expanded programs and specialists across a range of disciplines, and the introduction of a new physician to serve both adults and children on the main campus. The efforts of the working group will have a lasting and monumental impact on those who choose to call this region home for many generations to come.

Biography
Khendra Peay, M.D. specializes in child and adolescent psychiatry. She holds Board certifications in both general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. She received her undergraduate education at Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA. Dr. Peay received her subsequent medical degree at Virginia Commonwealth University – Medical College of Virginia Campus. She went on to complete both her psychiatry residency and child and adolescent fellowship at Indiana University. While at Indiana, she received additional fellowship training in Autism and Developmental Disabilities. Dr. Peay formerly practiced in Western Maryland at BrookLane Health Services, where she co-founded and co-directed an outpatient program providing psychiatric services to children and teenagers with Developmental Disabilities. Dr. Peay has given community talks on child and adolescent psychiatric issues. She has presented for ASPIN (Affiliated Service Providers of Indiana) training in Indiana. She has been the recipient of the NAMI-Indiana Henry Marciniak, M.D. award for patient care. Dr. Peay also collaborated on the Developmental Disorders chapter in Principles of Psychiatric Genetics. Dr. Peay has recently joined the outpatient practice at Novant Health Prince William Medical Center – Behavioral Health Outpatient Services.
