On July 15 – 16, 2014, the Dumfries Police Department, with assistance from several of the Prince William County Police Department specialty units, held the fifth session of the Kid’s
Academy at the Dumfries Volunteer Rescue Station. Several teachers from Dumfries Elementary School also assisted in preparations for the academy. This program started in 2011 with a dual purpose of fostering positive relationships between youths and police officers while providing valuable information to help prepare recently graduated elementary school students for the challenges they may face as they enter middle school. This program is very unique in the Commonwealth where youth-focused academy programs usually are geared to high school students.
During the two-day program, 24 participants were provided insightful information on the following topics of concern:
Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Avoidance
In addition, the program provided demonstrations in all of the areas listed on the attached sheet and culminated with a staged crime scene where participants applied CST tactics and procedures in gathering evidence and solving a staged crime.
The Dumfries Police Department hopes to expand the program next year to three days and include the Fire and Rescue Services in a “Kids Public Safety Academy.”
