For the second time, Edgemoor Art Studio, Inc. in Lake Ridge has received a Kathleen K. Seefeldt Award for Arts Excellence.

This honor was awarded by the PWC Arts Council at the awards ceremony held at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, on the evening of May 26th, 2016. In 2013, the studio received the award for Outstanding Arts Organization. This year, however, instructor/owner Ruth Johnsen received the Outstanding Art Educator award.

Johnsen had no idea that she was in the running for the award. “I was flabbergasted,” she said. “But this award would not have happened without the awesome support from the parents!”

Edgemoor Art Studio, Inc. provides instruction for children ages 3 to 18 in all mediums of art, including pastels, oils, acrylics, and watercolor. The main emphasis of each class is to nurture the child’s individual creativity and encourage that process to increase both skill and self-confidence. Classes run throughout the weekday for homeschoolers and younger children, as well as after-school and Saturday classes for school-age students who would like to further explore their art interests and become creative thinkers.

Johnsen also runs phonics lessons for preschoolers and hosts her highly popular “Arty Parties” Her birthday themes are customized for the child, and range from the ever-popular Frozen to Minecraft to zoo parties, complete with elegant and elaborate decorations and a self-made artwork, which each child gets to take home.

Several of Edgemoor’s students have won prestigious awards in the community, including 1st place for Acrylic Painting in the Chinn Regional Library’s Creative Art Contest in 2014, and 1st and 2nd place consistently at the annual Prince William County Fair. Although Johnsen herself was surprised by the award, members of her studio and their parents were not. All cite her solid work ethic and dedication to teaching fine arts while making sure that students enjoy themselves.

Johnsen will put her Outstanding Art Educator award to good use this summer with Edgemoor’s Art Rocks! Camps. The half-day camps run each week in June-August. For more information on camps or weekly classes, contact the studio at 703-490-2355.
